To my students and players of the Class of 2020,
Today, due to the continued increase in the spreading of COVID19, we received the word that our governor has made the decision to close school for the remainder of the 2019/2020 school year. Upon hearing those words, my heart broke and just like many of your teachers the tears started to flow. Not from anger about the decision, because there is no safe choice but to cancel, but for the experiences you all are missing right now.
This is what I’m asking you to do.
Instead of concentrating on what we are not doing this last months of school, try to do this.
Just call if you need me and I will do my best to help you in any way possible,
Your Teacher and Coach
Today, due to the continued increase in the spreading of COVID19, we received the word that our governor has made the decision to close school for the remainder of the 2019/2020 school year. Upon hearing those words, my heart broke and just like many of your teachers the tears started to flow. Not from anger about the decision, because there is no safe choice but to cancel, but for the experiences you all are missing right now.
This is what I’m asking you to do.
Instead of concentrating on what we are not doing this last months of school, try to do this.
- Remember the everyday moments you’ve had with your friends in the halls, on the field, in the cafeteria, and hanging outside of the school.
- Remember the 100’s maybe 1000’s of hours you spent practicing and playing the sport you love. The team that became another family. The coaches who became another parent figure and who would kick your butt about playing hard, keeping your grades up, and becoming a better person.
- Remember that teacher who believed in you and pushed you to do better with your studies. Those teachers who didn’t leave at the last bell of the day but who loved their students so much they stay hours after school (without pay) to help you learn and find the success we knew you had in you.
- Remember the times you did well and were praised by teachers, peers, and parents.
- Remember the hard times where you received discipline. Not to ruin your day, but to push you to become a better you.
- Remember the administrators, counselors, and other staff who worked countless hours, so you were in the right classes, had sporting equipment, food to eat, that you felt safe in our classes, and that you had the support to be successful in your classes.
- Remember the victories and the loses. Whether it be on the field, in the classroom, at a job, or our personal life. The victories and more importantly the losses prepare you for life.
- Remember that your teachers and coaches were called to do this job and what we do every day at the school. Those teachers who not only taught but also filled the roles of substitute parents for those who didn’t have a parent, heath care giver, provider of food, counselors, therapists, protectors, life coaches, job finders, and whatever role we needed to fill that day. Those men and women who were with you eight plus hours a day love you all and want the best for you.
- Remember it’s fine to be upset and sad about what has happened this spring but please avoid anger because that hurts your soul and makes your family and friends miserable.
- Try not to dwell on the loss of prom, trips, spring break, and graduation because your parents, family members, friends, teachers, school support staff, administrators, and coaches honor your hard work and we will find some way to celebrate you. But more importantly, we honor you in our hearts.
- While the leaders are trying to work out alternative plans for the loss of spring sports, graduation, senior trips, and proms. Remember the blessing you have instead of what you lost during this quarantine.
- Allow this time away to make you a better person, student, and friend. Keep doing your online assignments and try to keep some sort of schedule to keep your mind busy.
Just call if you need me and I will do my best to help you in any way possible,
Your Teacher and Coach
